Thoughts on crochet patterns

While I was undergoing treatment for breast cancer, I lost all my hair. I’m very cold natured anyway – so my head was always cold (w/o the hair) even when I was sleeping.

I had done some searches on the internet to find crochet patterns. Really love to crochet!

Found some really easy ones and began crocheting little skull caps that I could wear around the house and to sleep. Even took to wearing them when I went out – which wasn’t very often.

This one is made with New Bernat Cool Crochet yarn – 70% cotton and 30% nylon in the Summer Cream color. Used a G crochet hook.

This one is a single crochet skull cap, made with Caron Simply Soft Tweed yarn – 98% Acrylic and 2% Rayon in the White color. Probably an F or G hook.

And this one is a double crochet skull cap made with Caron Simply Soft yarn – 100% Acrylic in the Embroidery Paint color. Probably an F or G hook.

Since I have crocheted for years, and had so many patterns already – most of them in my filing cabinet – you would have thought I would have everything I needed. But at that point – I guess I was too tired to go looking. Much easier to find and print off the web :)

The organizing that I did this weekend, see previous post, led me to find patterns and magazines from the ’70s. Talk about not being able to get rid of anything. I went through them yesterday, and would you believe, I still couldn’t throw them away. I’m sure that someday I will try some of the patterns for afghans that I found.

I found a really cute hat pattern that I’m going to try this week. Maybe after I make it – I’ll post the picture. In the meantime… where are my crochet hooks :(

More thoughts on aging

March 5, 2007 at 8:26 am | In On Aging | Leave a Comment

This weekend, I wanted to catch up on tasks that had not been done. And today, Monday – my whole body aches. Why? A few reasons -

Task #1

Since we’ve lived in our house for the last almost 11 years – we have had 3 TVs that for one reason or another, stopped working. So a few months ago, we bought a new TV – one of those flat screen models.

We are on a satellite for our TV, so when the TV was delivered and set up – we just had the satellite connection installed.

That left the DVD player and the VCR player (wasn’t smart enough to get a combination…) to be set up. So this weekend, I finally got enough ambition to get both connected and tested. Of course this was more of an effort on my DH’s part, since he had to move the heavy cabinet away from the wall, so I could get behind it and work on the wires. It took several attempts before I actually got everything working. Not perfectly – because I want to be able to record on either/both of the devices, and right now I can only view.

Task #2

Reorganized my sewing workroom- have a big sewing table that the sides drop down and I’ve had it in the corner of the room. It became a catch-all, so every time I had to use it for my sewing patterns, I had to move everything off and find other places for all the ’stuff’.

This past weekend, I moved all my storage bins to the corner of the room, and moved the table to under the window. And found permanent places (until next time) for all the ’stuff’. Now I can fold the sides of the table down and make more space in the room. Then when I need to use the table – it’s ready to go.

One of my main reasons for this was because I want to work on my quilt – see quilting post – and haven’t had a large flat surface to work on. Thought about using my dining room table – but it’s round and 4 feet across – and trying to work on something large, on that table would end up getting me frustrated. And besides – my cat Wilbur is into everything. Wouldn’t be able to leave the quilt there without him trying to get to it. At least my sewing workroom has a door that I can close – and still leave the quilt in place to work on. Yeah!

And if that wasn’t enough tasks -

Task #3

Since my bout with cancer, and my retirement, I have wanted to do something in the evening when my DH is watching TV. That way we can spend time together. So I starting doing some of the cross stitch kits that I have had for a long time. It’s been years since I did any needlework.

So this weekend, I organized my craft kits – cross stitch, needlepoint, crochet, and knitting. My DH had given me a gift card for a needlework website, and I had purchased some really neat kits. However, one thing I noticed right away. I already had a number of kits that I had purchased (cross stitch and needlepoint) over the years that lay in a trunk in the closet.

After my attempts to organized all the kits – I turned to my DH, and told him that I had enough needlework to last me the next 25 years. Ah Ha he says. Thought so!

I’m not really happy with how I have organized the needlework – it’s just in a basket near my recliner. If I were to put them back in the trunk – they will probably getting forgotten – out of sight, out of mind – and I’d have to go rummaging in the trunk to find the next one…

So getting up and down, hauling storage bins and tables, and baskets – my legs hurt, my body hurts, can’t be because I’m getting old – right?

Thoughts about our cat

March 5, 2007 at 7:42 am | In Our Animals | Leave a Comment

Well, Wilbur, our inside cat has proved that he cannot keep quiet when we are trying to go to sleep – (see some of our previous posts).

So we are once again, keeping the bedroom door closed at night so he doesn’t keep us awake. Of course, it’s just me – since my dh falls asleep even before his head hits the pillow.

I asked my daughters about where our pet cats slept – when my daughters were growing up. And both of them said with them, on their beds, actually on their pillows!

Glad I have some of the younger generation I can ask – since I can’t remember that far back. And that would have been only…. 15-20 years ago :)

Our furnace is finally fixed

March 5, 2007 at 7:37 am | In Family & Friends | Leave a Comment

I talked about our furnace problems in a few of my last posts. Well, we finally have it fixed.

The repair man showed up one day – without notice, to install the new parts, only to find out that he didn’t have all of the parts needed….

So it took a couple of more days before he came back with everything in tow – and we now have heat!

A friend of mine had suggested that we replace the whole furnace, but now that we are retired, and on a limited budget – we didn’t want to go into our retirement savings to buy a new unit. Hopefully, it will last another few years, before we have to revisit this subject.
